Kathy Tompkins, a strategic consultant to international NGOs (non-government organizations), has been a member of the FightSMA board for 18 years, joining after learning about FightSMA on the NBC Today Show. The New York City native has two daughters (Lacey and Sabrina). Lacey was diagnosed with Type 2 spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) as a baby, and now, after graduating from Barnard College in New York, is a media planner with Digitas, a member of the Publicis Group. Kathy’s encouraging perspective as an activist and a mom: “…the diagnosis is overwhelming, but there are services and technology available now that did not exist years ago… you do have to put the pieces together. Children can excel!”
